August 22, 2011 The Yoga Sutras: Pain

Taken from the "Yoga Sutras," the rough translation of this sutra by Swami Satchidananda from Sanskrit to English is: "...to one of discrimination, everything is painful, due to its consequences; the anxiety and fear over losing what is gained; the resulting impressions left in the mind to create renewed cravings; and the constant conflict which control the mind." I interpret this to mean that all experiences that come through the outer world are painful, even if they seem to bring pleasure because, ultimately, we fear losing them. You may enjoy them, but you must also enjoy their passage. There is pain and pleasure in everything. shanti. |
