Seasonal Health: Allergies

The onset of warm weather brings with it so many wonderful elements. However, one downside for many people is allergies (myself included.)

As much as possible, I try to take preventative measures during the height of my allergy season, like avoiding leaving windows open when allergens may creep in and/or using an air purifier.

The yogic tradition of using a neti pot, called Jala Neti, is a nasal irrigation technique that practitioners use to cleanse nasal passages. Click here to learn more about the neti pot.

Whether using allergy medication or homeopathic methods, (or a combination of the two) finding the right balance is a very individual process. But I think it's pretty safe to say anything that allows us to breath easier is a good thing.

Om Shanti.

Low Back Pain

Wearing pumps (or in the case of some men, more fine, stylish shoes for the office or for special occasions) can wreak havoc on your feet. We all know that high heels can put added stress on your lower back and the legs overall.

Although I don't wear heels as often as I used to, I don't think I'll ever give up wearing my favorite pumps altogether. These days, I just make sure that I stretch out my legs and feet more after wearing them to relieve the tension; downward-facing dog (or a simple calf stretch) is an excellent pose to release out some of these tensions in the body.

Shanti!

Twisting Poses

Twists are a wonderful way to relax the body and give the internal organs a gentle massage. A relaxing, reclined twist can also help to relieve stress and open the back as you breathe and relax into the pose.

Relax into the twist!

Accepting the Season

Despite being a native New Yorker, I have never been a fan of the cold winter temperatures. I can spend days writing "odes" and "haikus" about the sun and warm temperatures of summer.

In phone conversations with a good friend of mine in California, we often start off the discussion with "so how's the weather there?" Recently, as I began to groan about the windy New York cold, my friend remarked about the benefits of the seasons changing, which included the fact that you could wear fashionable winter outterwear (I guess the grass really must appear to be greener on the other side when looking from SoCal.)

As I mature, I am proud to say that I am gaining a slightly exasperated acceptance of winter. I eat warming comfort foods like soups and hot chocolate and I bundle up tight to allow my body to make peace with the cold.

But with daylight savings time fast approaching, I giddily look forward to the extra daylight (and anxiously await going to the park, sans socks.)

Shanti
