The Chakras

The chakra system is an ancient Hindu metaphysical understanding of the various systems of the human body. Chakra means "wheel" when translated from sanskrit to english, and each of the seven chakras from the ancient hindu texts, have subsequently been found to have correlations with major nerve plexuses and systems of the body in modern science. If a specific system is out of balance, understanding the system and what is necessary to bring balance to the chakra, is seen as a type of natural healing or Ayurveda.

Sahasrara/Crown- This chakra is associated with consciousness and spirituality. It also corresponds to the pituitary and thalamus glands and well as the Central Nervous System.

Ajna/Third Eye- This chakra is associated with perception. It also corresponds to the pineal gland which is responsible for sleep regulation.

Vishuddha/Throat- This chakra is responsible for communication and maturation. This area corresponds to the thyroid gland which regulates growth and energy levels.

Anahata/Heart- This chakra corresponds to the heart and the body's center. It corresponds to the thymus gland which plays a large role in the body's immune system.

Manipura/Solar Plexus- This chakra is associated with digestion and the conversion of food to energy for the body; corresponds with the adrenal glands

Svadisthana- This chakra is associated with reproductive system, sex and creativity. It is thought to be located near the sacrum.

Muladhara/Root- This chakra is associated with survival and the "fight or flight" response. It is located at the base of the spine and thought to be associated with the adrenal medulla.

Whether you are looking to heal or learn more about the body through the chakra system or through traditional modern scientific understandings of the body, (or both) having an understanding of how we can keep these systems working optimally is worth the investment for our well-being.

Shanti!

Good Hydration

Top 3 reasons to drink water regularly:

(1) Decreased risk of some cancers
Studies have linked the consumption of water with reduced risk of bladder cancer and a possible reduction in the risk of colon cancer.

(2) Aids with Digestive Processes
Water helps to aid with digestive processes of the body (aids constipation and reduces intestinal transit time.)

(3) Prevent Dehydration with age
As we age, studies have shown that we have a reduction in thirst and the elderly tend to be impacted by dehydration to a higher degree. Regular consumption of water reduces the risk of dehydration.

Water is a calorie and cost free (tap water) option. During the hot weather months especially (and particularly during exercise) it's important to remember to stay properly hydrated.

Remains of the Day

It's probably not a surprise to the average american adult that we don't have a lot of freedom/leisure time during our day. But as we hold jobs and careers the make us more sedentary, it is that much more important to dedicate time to being active and create opportunities for personal wellness.

When examining your day, look for opportunities to be active with your family and friends and work to create a plan to integrate wellness into your daily life. Working to integrate wellness and activity into your life will make those precious "remains of the day" that much more special.

Shanti!
