Detox & Cleanse

The word detox brings to mind juicing and perhaps dieting in order to cleanse the body and organs of toxins. However most scientific research does not support that these practices lead to bodily cleansing. Research shows that the body's organs (liver, kidneys, etc) are very efficient at clearing toxins from the body on their own. Some people who engage in detox programs report significant and power spiritual benefits. However, safety and education are key when it comes to your health and incorporating changes to nutrition.

Fresh juices, smoothies, etc, can serve as an inspiration to jumpstart a change in lifestyle. And if the concoction includes healthy ingredients that you would ordinarily miss in your diet, then this can be a wonderful addition to your healthy diet.

Below is a recipe for a delicious smoothie that I've named "Green Energy." Feel free to check it out and try it for yourself.

Shanti!

Green Energy Smoothie

Ingredients: 1 cup- Hemp milk (or soy, almond, rice or beverage of your choice), 1- banana, 6-8 stems- Kale, 1/4 cup- apple juice (if you like it sweeter, but I find it sweet without the apple juice.)

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

Sal"u"tations:Do You!

Some might find it cliche, but a new year can often represent a seasonal and natural opportunity for change, reflection and new beginnings. The one factor that continues to remain a challenge for many of us is making time for it in our busy lives.

When it comes to investing in our health and wellness, it's not going to happen on its own; we have to consciously create time and dedicate energy, a little each day, toward our fitness, nutrition and wellness.

Starting small, 15-20 minutes each day or every other day, is a great start. And be sure to love yourself along the way, because a positive outlook and positive energy is an excellent investment in your wellness.

Personal Mantra

In yoga classes we often hear, and sometimes chant, beautiful sanskrit mantras with varying meanings. However mantras can be practical and helpful in our daily lives and do not need to be recited in a foreign language in order to have meaning and purpose.

The repetition of words can help us to set our intention and focus. So whether a mantra is about focusing on improved health or reminding yourself to be more thoughtful, creating your own personal mantra can allow you to stay present with yourself and in your life.

Om Shanti Peace!

Posture & Balance

Posture is something that we can easily take for granted. Like most aspects of our health, we have to work to retain our posture over our lifespan. Reductions in bone density and muscle mass can negatively impact our posture and gait, but lots can be done to prevent it. A study of adults with hyperkyphosis (rounding of the spine) found that those who engaged in a regular yoga practice were able to reduce their hyperkyphotic curve.

Back bending poses like cobra or natarajasana, which engage and strengthen the upper back muscles while stretching the muscles of the chest, are some poses that may help reduce hyperkyphosis. Engaging in any regular activity that stretch and strengthen those muscle groups will probably do the trick as well.

Shanti!
